How To Get The Best Fake Tan Of Your Life!

With the statistics showing that Australia and New Zealand have the highest melanoma rates in the world*, it is time (if you have not already) to re assess the duration you spend in the sun. We know that vitamin D is necessary to maintain good health and to keep bones and muscles strong and healthy. But we also know that the UV rays that stream down from the heavens can cause skin damage through to the development of cancerous cells. Studies have shown that wearing sunscreen, a hat and appropriate clothing in the harsh sun can prevent all of the above from developing. End of story.

Baking in the sun to get some ‘colour’ should NOT be an option and looking for a natural alternative is the right decision for your overall health. So if you have not taken the plunge yet and have not tried a toxin free sunless tanner then this is your ‘how to’ guide to getting the BEST fake tan of your life!

  1. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

In order to get an even tan this step is the most important one, it will give you a smoother, more even fake tan if you exfoliate your body from head to toe. The idea is that you exfoliate to remove dead skin cells that are on the surface of your skin, unclog your pores and prevent uneven skin tone. This can be done 24 - 48 hours before you plan to apply your self tanning product. To do this we recommend you use a natural loofah or an exfoliating mit, you can try the Eco Tan Extreme Exfoliant Glove, made with plant fibres to remove dead skin cells. Or if you prefer using a scrub, we recommend you try Skin Juice Berry Buff Body Scrub with lactic acid, ensuring your skin is deeply cleansed and exfoliated, leaving it super smooth ready for your tan!

  1. Moisturise Dry Areas Of The Body

This is areas like the palms, knuckles, cuticles, elbows, feet — that tend to absorb a lot of colour. If you hydrate those spots on the body it actually puts a barrier between your skin and the self-tanner, keeping your fake-glow looking more natural. To hydrate, apply a, lightweight moisturiser a few hours in advance, like Skin Juice – Lemon Sorbet Cream. This deliciously scented, non greasy, lightweight formulation will soften and leave the skin hydrated.

  1. Apply, Apply, Apply …

If you have ever had orange tinted palms it is a dead giveaway you have used a self-tanner. SO to ensure this doesn’t happen, get into a habit of using a tanning mit (which also helps to give you an even application) but if you do not have one, use a pair of disposable latex gloves to avoid the staining of your hands.

Now, It’s time to get your plan of action ready and apply the tanner in sections. We recommend you try the Certified Organic Eco Tan Invisible Tanning Creme, which does not streak, is easy to apply and will give you a beautiful bronze glow. Starting at your ankles and applying in a circular motion work your way up to your shoulders to prevent any weird marks when you bend over, and save your arms and hands for last. Remember always use tanner sparingly to the drier areas of the body like your knees, feet and elbows. Just remember self-tanner mistakes happen, but there's no need to start from scratch when they do. If streaks or splotches appear, lightly exfoliate and buff the area to blend in the colour.

Top Tip: When applying to the back of the hands, knees and elbows you can use a cotton wool pad or a small sponge to dab tanner on sparingly.

  1. Prolong your tan

So you are loving your tan, now its time to maintain and prolong your bronze glow. To do this you need to stay hydrated both inside and out, drinking lots of water and applying moisturiser daily. We recommend you use Eco by Sonia Driver Organic Coconut Body Milk. This product is formulated with a blend of Aloe and Coconut to calm skin irritation, and a luxurious blend of Jojoba and Macadamia to feed and nourish your skin, leaving it feeling hydrated and smooth, perfect to prolong the life of your tan.

Be Well xx
