What’s massive on social media, is bright green, and is THE latest health obsession? Yes, we’re talking about chlorophyll! Chloro-what? (don’t worry, we’re not going to get all scientific on you!)
Put very simply, chlorophyll is what makes plants green in colour. And people are going crazy for it. They can’t get enough of the green stuff. They’re making chlorophyll water, adding it to smoothies, drinking chlorophyll shots - it’s even a huge TikTok trend, with the hashtag #chlorophyll notching up over 300 million (yes, million!!) views and counting, as people show off the results of their chlorophyll consumption.
So why would you want to drink liquid chlorophyll, exactly? Let’s look at some of the benefits of this green-shaded supplement, the facts behind the fad, and how you can make it part of your health, wellness, and even beauty routine!
WHAT IS CHLOROPHYLL?
Chlorophyll is found naturally in the cells of plants. Not only does it make leaves green, it’s essential to give the plant its nutrients and energy to grow (remember learning about photosynthesis in school biology? Yes, it’s part of that!).
Which is all well and good if you’re a plant of course – but how does it help our health? Well, chlorophyll has antioxidant properties and it’s packed with vitamins and minerals – which is great news for general wellbeing and vitality.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHLOROPHYLL?
Look on TikTok and you’ll see people claiming that chlorophyll is their super-charged secret weapon to tackle all sorts of health issues, from skin problems and weight loss to lack of energy. Celebrity fans include Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon, who says she drinks it to keep her skin clear.
There have been some (albeit limited) scientific studies on the potential benefits of chlorophyll. It may be beneficial for treating acne and also for anti-ageing, ‘significantly improving’ skin elasticity and wrinkles in one study. It’s also said to be a great ‘internal’ deodoriser – goodbye body odour and bad breath! – and many people also like to use it to detox, as it’s believed to help cleanse the body of impurities.
I WANT TO TRY CHLOROPHYLL! HOW DO I TAKE IT?
The most natural source of chlorophyll is leafy green vegetables, like spinach. But a supplement is also a simple and easy way to get your green fix. Liquid chlorophyll is one of the most popular ways to up your intake. Liquid chlorophyll is usually made with chlorophyllin, a water-soluble derivative of chlorophyll - just add a few drops to water to make the famous ‘chlorophyll water’ that Tik-Tokers love, or mix it with a drink of your choice.
