A Guide to Naturally Cleaner and Whiter Teeth

Whiter teeth is something that many people in our cosmetically driven world desire to achieve. There are many over-the-counter teeth whitening products and every year tens of thousands of Australians will spend big dollars to change the shade of their teeth using harsh chemicals and toxin filled products. Not only are they filled with toxins that I cannot pronounce but they are also being absorbed through the skin inside your mouth and really the only things that should go into your mouth are things that are safe enough to eat..hmmm food for thought..

So lets begin, by acknowledging that some of us are genetically predisposed to more yellow teeth than others and no matter how well you practise dental hygiene, your teeth will never be as white as Barbie and Ken’s teeth. But do take on board that a number of the below remedies WILL help you get whiter teeth and be able to maintain them at home naturally.

Eat Strawberries

Strawberries contain an enzyme called Malic Acid and also Vitamin C, which has shown to help whiten teeth. The astringent found in strawberries help remove stains, while Vitamin C washes away plaque. Mash up a few strawberries and brush your teeth with this delicious mixture a couple of times a week to see results

Orange Peel

An Orange peel isn’t just a piece of compost scrap. Another natural way to whiten your teeth is by cleaning your teeth with a fresh orange peel. Yes, you heard right, if you do this on a regular basis you will reduce the yellow tinge on your teeth. Simply rub the peel all over your teeth at night before heading to bed. The vitamin C and Calcium in the orange peel will combat the microorganisms throughout the night. You can do this a couple of times a week for a few weeks to see results.

Oil Pulling

When I initially heard of this years ago, I thought literally .. how is this possible?? Well it is possible and so super easy with a heap of benefits. Oil Pulling is an ancient remedy, which originated in India thousands of years ago. The process is harmless, very inexpensive and the benefits are not only whiter teeth but better oral hygiene. When Oil Pulling, use a good quality organic Cold Pressed Coconut oil or shake it up a little with pre packed Keeko Organic Oil mixture that comes in a variety of refreshing flavours. You swish the oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes and be mindful that the swishing process involves gently pushing and pulling the oil around and through the teeth. Best done first thing in the morning, daily as part of your oral hygiene routine.

 Activated Charcoal

This one is not pretty, but it is very effective, leaving your teeth whiter and it can be easily maintained. The way it works is the activated charcoal is a highly absorbent porous substance that binds to things like tannins that stain teeth and leave them yellow or brown. Which means when you spit the charcoal out of your mouth once you are done brushing the stains will disappear along with your spit! Great huh? You will need to get your hands on some activated food grade charcoal like My Magic Mud or Charcoal MeDip your toothbrush into the charcoal (a little goes a very long way) and brush your teeth and rinse. It is recommended you do this before bed. It is gentle enough on tooth enamel so you can use it 2 – 3 times a week until you get your desired result, then maintain it once a week.

The bottom line is fairly simple, as explained you can use any of these effective natural remedies to whiten your teeth but also be mindful of dark drinks; tea, coffee and wine as these generally will stain your teeth.

Go get those pearly whites!

Be Well xx
